What is powder coating, and why is it the most durable finish?

Powder coating is a dry finishing process, not a wet paint. Instead of spraying liquid paint onto the wheel, we apply a fine, electrostatically charged powder that clings evenly to every surface, then bake the wheel in an oven so the powder melts, flows out and hardens into one continuous, seamless film. Because it is cured by heat rather than left to air-dry, the finish bonds tightly to the metal and builds up far thicker than paint and lacquer — a coating that can last several times longer than a conventional painted finish before it shows its age.

Getting there depends almost entirely on the preparation. First the wheel is stripped of its old finish and cleaned back, then blasted to bare, sound aluminium so nothing is trapped under the new coat. Any corrosion is dealt with at this stage, because powder will not hide flaws — it magnifies a bad surface. Only once the wheel is clean and true do we apply the powder and cure it. That thick, baked-on layer is what gives powder coating its edge on kerbs, chips, corrosion and the daily assault of brake dust and salt that eats ordinary lacquer.

Colours: reinventing tired silver alloys

The second reason drivers choose powder coating is the look. Because the coat is opaque and applied fresh, you are not tied to the wheel’s original shade — you can change the colour completely. Gloss and satin black are the most popular by far, giving almost any car a sharper, more purposeful stance. Anthracite and gunmetal grey are the understated choice that flatters silver and grey bodywork. Bronze has become the go-to for a sporting, modern look. Between matte, satin and gloss finishes there is a wide catalogue to choose from, so a set of dull, oxidised alloys can be reinvented rather than simply patched. Powder coating usually sits around or a little above the cost of a standard painted refurbishment, because there is more preparation and a full blast-and-bake process behind it — and it is often similar to, or a touch below, a diamond-cut refinish for a set. As a rough guide for the UK, most jobs fall in the ranges below, but the accurate figure for your wheels comes from a free quote, because wheel size, the colour you choose and how much prep the wheels need all move the number.

A few things move the price. Larger wheels — 19 inches and above — have more surface to coat and take longer. Wheels with heavy corrosion, old flaking lacquer or previous poor repairs need more stripping and prep before they can be coated. A custom or premium colour costs more than a standard black or anthracite. And coating all four together almost always works out better per wheel than a single one. When powder coating is the right call — and when it is not

Powder coating is the best choice when you want maximum durability, a colour change, or both: it is the toughest everyday finish and it transforms the look. Where it is not the right answer is on a diamond-cut wheel. Those bright, machined, mirror-faced alloys get their two-tone look from a lathe cutting the bare metal, and an opaque powder coat would bury that machined face for good. If you simply want everyday kerb scuffs put right in the original colour at the lowest cost, a standard painted repair may be all you need.

There is one firm rule whatever finish you choose: a wheel has to be sound before it is coated. A crack or a buckle is a structural fault, and no finish should ever go over the top of it — it has to be made safe first. How long does powder coating alloy wheels take?

Powder coating is a more involved process than a quick painted touch-up, so it is usually a two-to-three-day job for a set of four, sometimes a little longer if the wheels need heavy stripping or corrosion work first. Most of that time goes on preparation and curing rather than the coating itself: stripping the old finish, blasting back to bare metal, dealing with any corrosion, then coating and oven-baking so the finish is fully hardened before the wheels go back on. Rushing the cure is how a coating fails early, so it is not a stage we skip.
